He has received the highest honor in international statistics,

the Morningside Gold Medal of Applied Mathematics.

Tsinghua University held the appointment ceremony for Professor Liu Jun
as a "Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor of Tsinghua University".
The internationally renowned statistician Liu Jun
has joined Tsinghua University on a full-time basis.

On behalf of the university, Li Luming extended a warm welcome to Professor Liu Jun for joining Tsinghua full-time. He said that Professor Liu Jun has deep ties with Tsinghua University and has made outstanding contributions to the construction and development of the university's statistics discipline over the years. Tsinghua University places high importance on the development of its faculty, consistently upholding the strategy of strengthening the university through talent as a core development strategy, and continuously increasing efforts to attract high-level talents. He expressed the hope that after joining Tsinghua full-time, Professor Liu Jun would fully leverage his extensive academic influence, seize the opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution led by artificial intelligence, propel Tsinghua's discipline construction in statistics and data science to new heights, cultivate more high-level, top-notch innovative talents, and contribute to the university's accelerated advancement toward the forefront of world-class universities.
Liu Jun stated that he was born and raised in the Tsinghua campus, sharing an inseparable and deep bond with the institution. His decision to return after sixty years stems from his passion for education and scientific research, as well as the call of national sentiment. Statistics and data science are crucial methodologies and ways of thinking for interdisciplinary research, serving as important cornerstones for the development of artificial intelligence, with broad prospects for growth. In the future, leveraging Tsinghua's comprehensive disciplinary advantages in the field of artificial intelligence, he will do his utmost to promote the rapid development of disciplines such as statistics and data science, and assist in building the Department of Statistics and Data Science into a well-known, integrated academic hub for industry, academia, and research both domestically and internationally.
Academician Chen Songxi, Chair of the Department of Statistics and Data Science, expressed his respect for Professor Liu Jun's full-time appointment and looked forward to working together with Professor Liu Jun to promote the high-quality development of statistics and data science at Tsinghua and in China.
Representatives from relevant national ministries and commissions, Beijing municipal departments, and sister universities, as well as heads of relevant schools, departments, and offices within the university, attended the ceremony.
Liu Jun began serving as a visiting professor at Tsinghua University in 2005. In 2015, he led the establishment of the Tsinghua University Center for Statistical Science and served as its Honorary Director, actively attracting several outstanding overseas faculty members to positions at the university, significantly enhancing the international influence of Tsinghua's statistics discipline. In 2024, as the Director of the Preparatory and Development Committee, he helped establish the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University.
